❄ What makes Rachel special? Rachel is a tripawd: she lost one of her front legs after being run over by a car when she was living on the streets. She has adapted wonderfully to life as a tripawd, and walks without difficulty.​

Rachel is a sweet, quiet dog who spent her whole life living on the streets. She was a beloved "neighbourhood dog," living outside, but lovingly cared for by local residents. Although she was loved, she wasn't completely safe, and at some point she was hit by a car and injured so badly that her leg had to be amputated. The local residents came together to pay for her treatment. Once she'd recovered, she returned to her familiar spot on the streets and carried on living as a tripawd neighbourhood dog. Despite everything, she was content with her life, and loved all the people who took care of her.​

But under the Massacre Law, her life as a neighbourhood dog is no longer allowed, as dogs are no longer permitted to live on the streets. The government shelter team came to collect her. Knowing she wouldn't survive there as a disabled dog, local rescuers asked us for help, and Rachel made it to the Melez enclosure just in time, before she was taken.

Rachel is a sweet, calm, well-balanced dog who loves people.

She's been a stray her whole life, used to a quiet daily routine within the same few streets, without any great adventures. She had her regular spots, with regular people who always fed her, and lived happily in that little bubble of watching the world go by and seeking a bit of attention. Her life was limited, but it was stable and predictable, and after years of that familiarity, life in our busy, chaotic shelter has been hard for her. She's clearly unhappy here, and always wants to go back outside.

Rachel isn't especially fond of other dogs. Left in peace, she's perfectly content, and at the moment she lives peacefully alongside the other dogs in her kennel, she just doesn't want to interact with them. This seems more pronounced here, likely due to the stress of kennel life, than it was outside, where she was somewhat more neutral towards other dogs. So it's possible that in a quiet home, she'd be happy living alongside another calm dog, though she's not one who wants to play.

It's a similar story with cats: she tolerates them, as long as they leave her alone. And if a cat doesn't get the message and keeps pushing for attention, Rachel makes herself very clear: a curled lip says it all.

People, on the other hand, Rachel absolutely adores. You can tell she's a stray who's spent her life around people, likely approaching them for a bit of attention or food. She's sweet to everyone she meets, and unlike many street dogs, she has a particular soft spot for men, always eager for cuddles and attention.

​

Rachel walks nicely on the lead and loves a quiet sniff about outdoors. She's not fast, and long distances aren't her thing since she's missing a paw, but she thoroughly enjoys a leisurely stroll. She isn't easily spooked and is perfectly relaxed around traffic and busy environments. When we brought her to a coffee shop, she behaved as if she'd been visiting there her whole life, first asking cheerfully for some attention before settling down calmly and contentedly. She does find being picked up a little nerve-wracking, but she's never once been defensive or shown any aggression towards people.

Rachel is really longing for a quiet, stable life again: a predictable routine, and a place where she can snuggle into her basket and give and receive plenty of love. Picture her lazing about at home, cosy cuddles with her adopters, peaceful walks, and more cuddles after. She deserves that, and we'd love to see her get it.

​

We're looking for lovely adopters for Rachel with a home that has no steps up to the entrance, or, for a flat, access to a lift.

​

In Rachel, you'll gain an incredibly friendly, stable, easy-going and sweet dog, who will be endlessly grateful for the chance to finally call somewhere home.

​

The dogs arrive in their homes microchipped, up to date on their Rabies and Mixed vaccinations, spayed/neutered, dewormed and deflead and tested for Heartworm, Ehrlichia, Leishmania and Anaplasma. The dogs visit the vets for a final health check before they travel. If needed, their teeth are cleaned and X-Rays are taken of any potential areas of concern. Any concerns or potential health issues we are aware of will be communicated to you beforehand.
