❄ What makes Ophelia special: her beautiful fluffy ears!

This is Ophelia, a funny little dog who feels very stressed and easily overstimulated within the walls of the busy shelter, who is ready for a calmer life free of our enclosure!

She is a little diva with a distinct personality, certainly no wallflower, and above all, an absolute sweetheart!

Ophelia was rescued in the winter of 2025 from a Government shelter in northeastern Turkey. This is a fairly conservative region where there are few operational rescuers. Dogs that end up in Government shelters there have virtually no chance of a better life. Ophelia had just been abandoned at the shelter by her previous owner when a local rescuer spotted her. Not accustomed to such a harsh and chaotic environment, poor Ophelia was completely in shock and terrified. The rescuer immediately saw that she had no chance of survival in the shelter and asked us for help.

When Ophelia arrived at our shelter, she was terrified, and it really took a while before she trusted us.

She was very shy and cautious. Now she is well settled and, fortunately, is feeling a bit more comfortable in her own skin.

Nevertheless, due to stress, Ophelia remains constantly alert and easily distracted in the shelter. Because of this, she is less focused on people, but always focused on her surroundings and everything happening around her. She starts barking when she becomes overstimulated. She also always looks for a spot where she has a good overview of the situation. In her kennel, she is a cheerful, outgoing little dog who fits in well with the group, but mostly does her own thing.

She always comes to greet us cheerfully, wagging her bushy tail. She sniffs us rigorously, and then she continues to stand on the lookout, keeping an eye on what is happening in the other parts of the shelter, or she goes off to play by herself.

Ophelia always enjoys being petted and getting a little attention, but she doesn't constantly come asking for attention on her own; she is perfectly capable of entertaining herself.

When new people come in, she observes the situation for a moment, and usually doesn't come to greet them on her own. But when visitors approach her and she is petted, she starts wagging her tail and she loves it.

When she is taken for a walk, she is super happy! She wants to make the most of her time outside and seems to be in a hurry because of it. With her tremendous enthusiasm, she likes to walk ahead and can pull on the leash. It might feel as if she's walking you, instead of vice versa! Once she settles into the walk she can fully calm down and she'll start to walk well on the leash.

After an enthusiastic start, the rest of the walk proceeds very calmly and slowly, because Ophelia finds all new scents fascinating. The tiniest bit of pee from another dog must be examined and sniffed with precision! She'll have the tendency to overmarking, because her presence must be apparent from afar!

During the walk, Ophelia approaches anyone, wagging her tail cheerfully. Not so much to get attention herself, but mainly to give the other person a good sniff. She really just loves a good sniff!

She is confident on the leash, even in new environments, and is confident meeting others passing by and being close to traffic. If it gets really loud and chaotic, for example during roadworks, she can get a bit stressed. She'll seek your support to feel safe. She gives you cautious, small licks to seek contact with you for some reassurance.

Ophelia doesn't seem to care much for other dogs. At the shelter, she tolerates them, but mostly does her own thing.

Outside the shelter, she is interested in meeting a new dog, only if she's at ease.

If a dog offends her by approaching her too aggressively and overwhelmingly, she won't forget this the next time they meet and she can bark at the dog when she sees him or her again. She can be unforgiving if you offend her!

When she first arrived at the shelter and was less confident, she did share a bed with a different dog every day. She sought safety with her little friend. So we do believe she is capable of being social once she can relax.

Ophelia is rather self-serving – don't expect her to want to you nor to dedicate her live for your approval!

She likes doing her own thing, but she does really enjoy having someone nearby. She is very sweet and friendly, and would love to have an owner to go on adventures with and discover the world together.

We hope to find Ophelia a home where she can truly relax. We hope that her adopter will give her the time and space that she craves and needs so badly. We believe she'll gradually be reassured that she no longer needs to be constantly high alerted, and hope to see her character develop.

Are you the one to offer her peace and security? And are you looking forward to walks with her where she can sniff around and explore? Then please consider welcoming Ophelia into your life.

Ophelia is currently in Turkey and is ready to travel to the EU or the UK.

The dogs arrive in their homes microchipped, up to date on their Rabies and Mixed vaccinations, spayed/neutered, dewormed and deflead and tested for Heartworm, Ehrlichia, Leishmania and Anaplasma. The dogs visit the vets for a final health check before they travel. If needed, their teeth are cleaned and X-Rays are taken of any potential areas of concern. Any concerns or potential health issues we are aware of will be communicated with you beforehand.
