❄ What makes Clarence special: his beautiful eye patch
Clarence came into our care in early 2026, after he was saved from a shelter in north east Turkey. This is an area where there are very few rescuers and animal lovers, and the dogs have little hope of a better life.
Clarence is a middle-aged dog, who probably spent his whole life living on the streets as a 'neighbourhood dog', being fed by local animal lovers, and never bothering anyone. He may not have had a home, but he was most likely pretty content with his life. Then the 'Massacre Law' made his life on the streets illegal, and he was rounded up and taken to the government shelter. He had lost his freedom, and had to live in a crowded kennel. A local animal lover saw how unhappy he was, and asked us for help. Clarence had clearly gone without proper care for a while when he came to us. His fur was very dirty and was terribly matted.
All Clarence wants is to be safe and loved, but he has never been able to experience what it is like to have a loving home before. Hopefully his luck will turn around now! More than anything, we want Clarence to spend his golden years living a life full of peace and comfort.
At the shelter, Clarence is a very quiet dog who withdraws from the hustle and bustle, barely moving from his own little corner. You can tell he's unhappy here, and that he misses the calm and routine of his old life. He spends his days lying down, quietly watching everything and everyone around him. Nothing gets past him.
We'd describe his energy level as low to moderate. It's possible he'll show a bit more energy once he's settled somewhere he's truly happy, but we don't expect him to ever become a particularly energetic dog.
Clarence prefers to keep to himself when it comes to other dogs. As long as he's left alone, he's perfectly content, though this may well change once he has a home base where he feels more at ease. Male dogs in particular make him uneasy, and he'd rather avoid them altogether. He can communicate this to other dogs by softly growling. He does sometimes make an exception for calm female dogs, occasionally finding them interesting enough to say hello and have a sniff. Out on walks, away from the shelter, he seems much more relaxed and neutral around other dogs. But sharing his living space with another dog is a step too far for him right now, and not something he'd enjoy.
Each morning, when someone walks into his kennel, Clarence faithfully leaves his favourite spot to come and say hello. He's genuinely fond of people, and will give you the happiest grin when you scratch him behind the ears. That's when you really see him light up. Once he's had his morning cuddles, he'll trot back contentedly to his spot to carry on with the rest of his day: keeping watch over everything and everyone. He's not the clingy type, and he doesn't need constant attention. He simply enjoys having people nearby, it helps him feel more settled, but he's just as happy without anyone fussing over him constantly.
Clarence has most likely never had a home before, and has never experienced what it is like to have a person to trust 100%. Although he is very friendly, he can also be cautious, and he gets nervous when there is too much fussing going on around him. When he first arrived in the enclosure and had a terribly matted coat, he required a muzzle to allow us to remove all the matted fur.
Clarence finds being put on the lead a little nerve-wracking, but once he's on it, he walks beautifully and clearly loves exploring. He genuinely relishes his walks. He never pulls, and he never tries to run or play, but he's plainly delighted to explore the world at his own steady pace, taking his time to enjoy a good sniff wherever he goes. He doesn't seem bothered by cars or traffic, though we suspect he'd feel most at home in a quiet environment rather than somewhere bustling and busy. Out of the kennel, walking calmly on the lead alongside someone he trusts, that's where Clarence truly comes into his own. He's cheerful, easy-going, and an absolute joy to be around.
We're confident he'd thrive even more in a peaceful home of his own. Picture him with a soft, cosy bed to nap in for hours, living a calm and peaceful life while his people go about their day around him. Simply watching the world go by is pure contentment for Clarence. The odd cuddle here and there, but otherwise just being together while everyone does their own thing, that's what he'd love most, and that's exactly the life we want for him.

Our dogs arrive in their homes microchipped, up to date on their Rabies and Mixed vaccinations, spayed/neutered, dewormed and deflead and tested for Heartworm, Ehrlichia, Leishmania and Anaplasma. The dogs visit the vets for a final health check before they travel. If needed, their teeth are cleaned and X-Rays are taken of any potential areas of concern. Any concerns or potential health issues we are aware of will be communicated with you beforehand.
